When shrinking the main breaker is the right call
A smaller main breaker buys busbar headroom for solar under the 120 percent rule. It is a routine, code-recognised move, and its real cost is that it permanently lowers what the service can draw.

Everything in this article can be read with the enclosure door open and every metal cover left in place. Do not remove a cover, and do not open a meter enclosure. If a number is not visible that way, it is a question for a licensed electrician, not something to go looking for.
“It is asking me to shrink the main breaker on somebody's existing house. That has to be a bug, and I would stop and phone support right here.”
The common misreading. Here is what is actually true.
The suggestion reads like the software wants to downgrade somebody's house, which is why it stops people. It is a normal move, it exists specifically to make solar fit an existing panel, and electricians do it regularly. It is also not free, and understanding the trade is the point of this article. On the interconnection list it appears as a derate: "Backfeed with Main Derate" is this same move.
The arithmetic is one line. A backfeed connection allows the main breaker and the solar breaker together to reach 120 percent of the busbar rating. Lower the main and the room left for solar grows by exactly the amount you lowered it.
The arithmetic
Take a 200A busbar with a 200A main. The ceiling is 240 amps, the main uses 200, and 40 amps are left for solar. That is enough for a modest system and not enough for a large one.
Drop the main to 150A and the ceiling has not moved, but the main now uses 150 and 90 amps are available for the solar term, which is roughly 17 kW of inverter output at 240 volts instead of 7.6. The panel did not change and the conductors did not change. What did change is the rating of the service: per NEC 230.79 a service is rated at its disconnecting means, so this is now a 150A service, and that is the number that goes on the utility application.
What it costs, and when it is wrong
The building can now draw less, and if the house genuinely uses more than the new main, it will trip. That is the real consideration, and it is a load calculation question rather than a preference. A load calculation is the NEC Article 220 sum of the square footage, the fixed appliances and the largest motor, expressed as a demand in amps. It is either a form your office fills in or something the software produces from the appliance list.
There is a floor. NEC 230.79 requires the service disconnect to be rated not less than the calculated load, and 230.79(C) sets a hard 100A minimum on a one-family dwelling. The replacement breaker also has to be one listed for that panel, and not every meter-main main breaker is field-replaceable.
It is the standard move on a house whose actual demand is well under the new main, which is most houses on a 200A service. It is the wrong move where the calculated demand is already above 80 percent of the proposed main, where the customer is about to add an EV charger or a heat pump, or where the panel is one nobody should be working breakers in and out of. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok, Zinsco, Challenger and Pushmatic are the names to look for on the label, and any panel with corrosion on the bus or scorching around a breaker is the same call.
A licensed electrician swaps the breaker. It is not a design-desk change, and it should be priced into the job before it is promised.
How to get the answer
Before accepting or rejecting the suggestion, get two numbers. If you are the homeowner being asked to approve this, these are the questions to put to your installer.
- 1Read the busbar rating and the current main breaker rating off the panel.
- 2Work out the headroom: busbar times 1.2, minus the proposed new main. Confirm it covers the solar breaker you need.
- 3Get an NEC Article 220 load calculation for the building, from your office or your installer. If calculated demand is above 80 percent of the proposed new main, do not shrink it.
- 4Check the proposed main against the 100A floor for a one-family dwelling.
- 5Ask what is planned for the property. An EV charger or a heat pump arriving next year changes the answer.
