Powerwall chassis vs expansion packs

A chassis contains an inverter and a battery. An expansion is battery only. Three chassis and one chassis with two expansions are different systems that draw differently.

Everything in this article can be read with the enclosure door open and every metal cover left in place. Do not remove a cover, and do not open a meter enclosure. If a number is not visible that way, it is a question for a licensed electrician, not something to go looking for.

The common misreading. Here is what is actually true.

Some battery products ship in two forms that get counted with the same word. A chassis is the full unit: battery plus the inverter that converts its power. An expansion pack is storage only, and it depends on a chassis to do the converting.

A Powerwall 3 chassis supplies about 11.5 kW continuous on its own. Three chassis is roughly 34 kW of instantaneous capability. One chassis with two expansions is still about 11.5 kW, with three units of stored energy behind it. Those are different systems with different wiring, and they produce different drawings.

Why the count alone misleads

Energy capacity scales with every unit you add, either way. Power output scales only with the chassis count. A customer who wants to run heavy loads during an outage needs chassis, not expansions, and an intake form that just says "3 Powerwalls" cannot tell you which they got.

This is the same trap as backup scope: the quantity sounds like the answer, and the arrangement is the answer.

How to get the answer

Read the nameplate. It is the only test that does not go wrong, and the field shortcuts people use are unreliable in both directions.

  1. 1Read the model on the label of each unit. That is the answer.
  2. 2A chassis has field-installed wiring landing on it, in conduit or cable, because its inverter has to connect. An expansion has none: it joins its host through a factory harness that plugs in, and the manufacturer prohibits field-wiring it.
  3. 3Do not count by stacking. Powerwall 2 units stack three high and every one of them is a chassis. Do not count conduits either: on multi-unit Powerwall 3 installs the wiring may be run through one unit to the next, so conduit count does not equal chassis count.
  4. 4On a job not yet installed, get the part numbers, not a count. A count alone does not tell you what you are getting.

What to photograph

  • The nameplate label on each unit, close enough to read the model number.
  • The full battery bank as installed.
