What the gateway does to your service
Where a gateway is the FIRST disconnecting means after the meter, it becomes the service disconnect and takes over the neutral-to-ground bond and the grounding electrode connection. Where a meter-main or a separate disconnect already sits ahead of it, that equipment keeps the role and the gateway takes neither.

The common misreading. Here is what is actually true.
A gateway does monitor. That is the visible part, and it is why the name suggests a meter. Its structural job on a whole-home backup is larger: it is installed ahead of the main panel and everything downstream is fed through it.
Whether it becomes the service disconnect depends on what is already at the meter. Fed straight from a plain meter with nothing between, the gateway is the first place power can be shut off, so it IS the service disconnect and it holds the two things that travel with that role: the point where neutral and ground are bonded together, and the connection to the grounding electrodes. Where the house already has a meter-main combo, a meter-disconnect, or a separate disconnect out at the service, that enclosure is still the first shut-off. It keeps the bond and the electrode connection, and the gateway sits downstream of it holding neither.
The grounding electrodes are the metal that ties the system to earth: the rods driven outside, and usually the rebar in the footing or the metal water pipe. The grounding electrode conductor is the single heavy wire, often bare copper, running from the service equipment out to them.
What happens to the old main panel
Where the gateway did take the service-disconnect role, the old main panel stops being service equipment and becomes a subpanel. Its neutral-to-ground bond has to be removed, because the bond belongs at the service disconnect and that is now the gateway. Where the gateway went in downstream of an existing meter-main, nothing moves and the bond stays where it was.
This single change explains most of the lines on a review screen that look wrong at first glance. The bond moved. The grounding electrode conductor moved. The panel that used to be the main is now downstream. None of those are errors. They are consequences of putting a gateway ahead of the service.

One more case worth knowing: a supply-side tap for the solar brings its own service disconnect, and that disconnect legitimately carries its own bond and electrode connection. Two bonds on one property is correct there, not a mistake.
How to get the answer
Open the design and trace the service in order. Step 1 governs the rest: everything follows from which piece of equipment is the first shut-off, not from whether a gateway is present.
- 1Follow the line from the meter. Whatever the first switch or breaker that can shut the whole thing off is, that is the service disconnect. It may be the gateway. It may be a meter-main that was there already.
- 2Confirm the neutral-to-ground bond is at that piece of equipment.
- 3Confirm the grounding electrode conductor lands there too.
- 4Confirm nothing downstream of it carries a second bond. A second bond is correct only where there is a genuine second service disconnect, such as a supply-side tap disconnect for the solar.
- 5If the gateway is NOT the first shut-off, do not go looking for a bond on it. It should not have one.
This is guidance for reading equipment that is already visible and for describing it on a drawing. It is not instruction for electrical work. Any work on service equipment, panels, or conductors is for a licensed electrician, and local code and utility rules govern.
