MCB vs MLO: does this panel have its own main breaker?
Plenty of panels are main-lug-only. The conductors land straight on lugs and the protection lives upstream, which means there is no main breaker to write down.

Everything in this article can be read with the enclosure door open and every metal cover left in place. Do not remove a cover, and do not open a meter enclosure. If a number is not visible that way, it is a question for a licensed electrician, not something to go looking for.

The common misreading. Here is what is actually true.
Many panels do have a main breaker: one larger breaker, usually two poles wide, sitting apart from the rows of branch breakers. That is a main circuit breaker, or MCB. But a main-lug-only panel, an MLO, has no main breaker at all. The feeder conductors land directly on a set of lugs and whatever protects them sits somewhere upstream.
This matters because writing down a main breaker that does not exist puts a fictional device on a permit drawing. Nothing downstream catches it. The number looks reasonable, the math runs, and the drawing shows a breaker the inspector will not find when they open the door.
How to tell them apart
An MCB is set apart. It is physically separated from the two columns of branch breakers, usually at the top, occasionally at the bottom, and it is wider than its neighbours. Its handle is stamped with a rating.
An MLO has no such breaker. Follow the thick feeder conductors coming into the panel and they terminate on bare metal lugs. From those lugs the power goes straight to the busbar and out to the branch breakers.
Where the protection went
There are two quite different MLO panels, and the difference decides the solar math. Most are fed from a breaker upstream, in the meter-main combo or a separate disconnect at the service. That upstream breaker protects the panel, and it is the number the busbar calculation asks for, because the code counts the device protecting the busbar rather than a main inside the panel.
The other kind is an MLO panel used as service equipment: the service conductors land straight on its lugs and nothing protects them, because the breakers inside the panel ARE the service disconnects. Solar there goes in on the supply side, and the busbar calculation does not apply at all. So do not just record that there is no main breaker. Record what feeds the panel.
When the setup asks for a main breaker rating and the panel is MLO, the honest answer is that there is no main breaker, not a guess at what it would be. There is a row for exactly that.
How to get the answer
Read the sticker on the inside of the panel door, then look at the breaker handles through the cover cutout. Both are visible with every cover in place.
- 1The door sticker states it outright. Look for wording like "main lugs only", "MLO", or a listed main breaker rating.
- 2One large breaker set apart from the rows, with a rating stamped on the handle: MCB. Write down that stamped number.
- 3An empty slot at the top with a blanking plate over it: the panel can take a main breaker and does not have one. That is a convertible panel, not MLO. Record no main breaker rating, and pick Convertible if the screen offers it. MLO means the enclosure has no slot at all.
- 4No breaker set apart from the rows, no empty slot, and nothing stamped anywhere but the branch breakers: treat it as MLO and confirm on the door sticker.
- 5Pick the row labelled "No MCB". Leaving the field blank does the same thing, but the named row puts the answer on the record instead of looking like a gap.
- 6If the sticker is missing and the handles do not settle it, stop there. Record it as unknown and ask a licensed electrician. Do not remove the cover to find out.
